The Master was icy cool. ‘“Burn me out”? What an eloquently vile turn of phrase. And so very inaccurate. I could have built this device myself: my people mastered such technology when your ancestors were primeval slime fussing around on beaches, trying to work out how to divide. I simply used you and the Cole woman as slave labour.’
He shook his head. ‘Your pathetic attempts to sabotage my godhood were dismantled moments after you installed them.
Did you really think I wouldn’t notice something as fundamental as your interference? Did you?’ He grabbed her throat with a black-gloved hand. ‘I have to admit I was both disappointed and impressed,’ he stated calmly, tightening his grip. Anjeliqua was finding it hard to breathe. ‘I didn’t think you were that technical, he whispered into her ear.
‘I remembered the patent application for that one,’ she gasped. The game was up, and she had no need to act as the simpering little woman any more.
The Master removed his hand and let Anjeliqua fall gasping to the cold blue marble floor. ‘You insect! You dared to stand in the way of my apotheosis? You dared to deny me the Lux Aeterna?’ He turned his back on her, rubbing his hands together. ‘But you can still be of service. Even without your puerile meddling. I always knew there was a chance that the flow would prove too great. I do need to calibrate the device – and the effect of the Lux Aeterna on the human form will provide a perfect chance for that calibration.’ The Master snapped his fingers at Arlene. ‘Make Ms Whitefriar comfortable within the framework.
Anjeliqua glanced towards the doorway, but realised that she had nowhere to hide. As Arlene grabbed her she struggled, but Arlene’s strength appeared to be almost superhuman.
‘No!’ she screamed. ‘Not now – I was so close!’
‘As they say on Earth, Ms Whitefriar: close but no cigar.’
He took a puff of his Cuban and laughed as Arlene brutally shoved Anjeliqua into the coffin-shaped framework of wire and circuitry snapping the restraints over her.
Unable to move, Anjeliqua just hoped that Mel had found the clue in time.
The Doctor stood up from the console and addressed Stuart and Paul. ‘I’ve located the Master’s TARDIS, and I’ve set my TARDIS to home in on it.’ He looked round at Stuart. ‘And yes, we will effectively be time-ramming the Master’s TARDIS. I’ll monitor the time frequencies and perform a temporal bounce-back at the moment of full ram.’
‘Sounds wonderful, Doc,’ growled Stuart. ‘Can’t we fly through a couple of supernovae and dive-bomb a quasar on the way? Just to ease the boredom?’
The Doctor arched an eyebrow. ‘Don’t be funny. This is an extremely dangerous manoeuvre, and not one that I relish.
But if we’re to rescue Mel, Arlene and Anjeliqua Whitefriar, and stop the Master from fulfilling his diabolical plans, it’s our only choice.’ He tapped the console; a whirring noise issued from one of the roundelled walls. Two padded couches flowed seamlessly from the wall.
‘Strap yourselves in, gentlemen,’ said the Doctor cheerily.
